VHS Video Camera, 1985

by Sears Roebuck and Co., Japan Model Number: 934.5379095

This machine combined the video camera, recorder and player in one unit. Previously, the camera and tape recorder were separate devices. Developed in the mid 1980s, camcorders were created with the ability to both play and record. Subsequent incarnations included on-board editing, sound and lighting. The tape transport was built into the stabilizing hand- set. Metallic oxide particles clung to the polyester strip by means of an adhesive that deteriorated over time, leading to dropouts, banding and a questioning of the nature of memory and the judiciousness of documenting the present.
