Audiocassette recorders were electronic devices used for recording audio, usually music or voice, signals onto a cassette tape. During the late 1970s consumers began adopting compact cassettes as an alternative to the bulky, more complicated reel- to-reel. Components included a radio receiver, a handle, a tape transport interface and a single, mono speaker that was considered a step down in quality from the larger, dual speaker. Because of the relative inexpensiveness of the single speaker model, it was a common sight in the bedrooms of listeners for who access to higher quality stereo listening opportunities were limited by economic circumstances.
