The development of solid-state technology in the mid 1970s allowed manufacturers to market increasingly smaller and smaller personal entertainment devices. The cathode ray tube was miniaturized for this portable tuner, display and 1/8” audio output. The small sized came at the cost of color as this appliance was limited to displaying only black and white and shades of grey. The bulky tubes used in signal processing were replaced by small, compact circuit boards. This unit shipped with a battery compartment and car/boat AC adapter and was a staple for alienated individuals with no interest in participating in shared experiences.
